Pause for New Mexico
Tell Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham that you support the comprehensive review of the federal fossil fuels program!
The federal oil and gas leasing program is fundamentally broken. The Biden Administration knows this and is rightly pausing oil and gas leasing for the first time in 40 years.
We need to assess the damage to our public lands and address the rollback of 125 vital health and environmental safeguards during the past 8 years.
The oil and gas lobby is working hard to convince us that the leasing pause is bad for NM. But we know that they care more about lining their own pockets than about what’s best for New Mexicans. Oil and gas companies have plenty of leases on hand to keep making profits while our government reviews industry practices and rules.
It’s critical that Governor Lujan Grisham hears from New Mexicans like you that you want our state to benefit from the assessment.
The communities that live alongside oil and gas operations suffer from higher rates of health impacts, such as asthma and even cancer. Between lax regulations, understaffed state agencies, inadequate bonding, insufficient royalty rates, thousands of abandoned wells, one thing is clear: outdated laws benefit industry — not NM’s communities.
Oil and gas leasing reform is long overdue.
Tell Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham that you want her to support the comprehensive review of the federal fossil fuels program and ensure that New Mexicans benefit from a just, equitable, and climate-resilient economy.
