Cameron Shaw
Cameron joined CAVU in November 2024 as the Florida Education Coordinator, where she supports students and teachers in communities impacted by sea level rise, flooding, warming ocean temperatures, and increased storms. Through the Climate Innovation Challenge (CIC), Cameron works to bridge the gap between climate science and local action, ensuring that education is accessible, engaging, and responsive to the realities faced by Florida’s coastal communities.
Growing up in Chicago, away from the ocean, Cameron developed a deep appreciation for marine life through informal learning spaces like the Brookfield Zoo and the Shedd Aquarium. These experiences shaped her belief in the power of education outside of traditional classrooms, reinforcing the importance of creating inclusive and accessible pathways into marine science. As a first-generation student, she also recognized early on how representation and diverse voices shape who has access to scientific knowledge and opportunities in conservation. These experiences fuel her commitment to ensuring that historically excluded communities are centered in environmental education and climate resilience efforts.
Cameron earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Spanish from Colorado State University, followed by a Master’s degree in Marine Conservation from the University of Miami, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in STEM Education at the University of Miami. Her work focuses on equitable science education, marine conservation, and community engagement, with a particular emphasis on using storytelling and hands-on learning to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.
With experience as a project coordinator, research assistant, and marine science educator, Cameron has led a variety of outreach and education initiatives across Florida, from developing projects within afterschool programs in under-resourced communities to leading shark conservation lessons that incorporate fossilized shark teeth she collects while SCUBA diving. She is deeply passionate about creating meaningful connections between people and the marine environment, believing that everyone should have the opportunity to see themselves in science and conservation.
When she’s not working, you can find Cameron SCUBA diving, paddleboarding, hunting for shells and shark teeth, snorkeling with manatees, or watching Love Island!
