On July 8th, an educational awareness trip was conducted by CAVU and its partners at Healthy Reefs Initiative. This trip targeted key policymakers such as the CEOs of Economic Development, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.

The group was taken by boat to areas that exemplify Belize’s rich marine ecosystems, and in contrast, were also shown areas suffering the consequences of poor coastal planning. Additionally, they previewed Sergeant’s Caye, where the need to regulate development of small cayes was made apparent. Sergeant’s Caye is a prime example of why natural defenses like mangroves and a healthy reef are so important. This important day trip conducted by CAVU and its partners sparked productive discussion regarding the urgent need for coastline protection.
