Located just 29 kilometers from the capital of San Jose, the cloud forest of El Cornelio lies in one of Costa Rica’s most deforested areas, the Acosta Region. Breathtaking vistas and sweeping mountain views are juxtaposed with steep, barren sliding hillsides. Deforestation in this area is large attributed to logging and unsustainable agriculture.

The cloud forest of El Cornelio lies in one of Costa Rica’s most deforested areas, the Acosta Region. Breathtaking vistas and sweeping mountain views are juxtaposed with steep, barren sliding hillsides. Deforestation in this area is large attributed to logging and unsustainable agriculture.

CAVU’s partner FUNDECOA was founded in 1994, to help combat the destruction and protect the remaining remnants of forests in the region. FUNDECOA carries out environmental education and outreach programs, scientific research and community events to raise awareness of the region’s rich bio-diversity and water resources. On April 7, 2009, FUNDECOA’s President Adilio Antonio Zeledón Meza flew with CAVU’s Program Director and CAVU photographer Dave Sherwood, to capture high-resolution GPS photography of the areas remaining forests, watersheds, high risk landslide areas and current uses.
