On February 26th Marcela Naranjo, CAVU ‘s project coordinator and Marcela Morales, office coordinator, took part in a meeting hosted by Incopesca and the Asociación de Pescadores Cuerderos de Palito, at Isla Chira. The association includes nineteen active members representing seventeen local families. These fishermen are dedicated to carrying out responsible artisanal fishing and also assist with the monitoring and protection duties in this area, the first Responsible Fishing Area established within the Gulf of Nicoya.
This meeting served to introduce CAVU to the community of Palito, who’s residents will be taking part in the production of an educational film being created by CAVU, The film will be used by Incopesca as an outreach tool to educate the public on the benefits of responsible fishing methods and to promote sustainable management of fisheries in the Gulf of Nicoya . Through a WFF (Walton Family Foundation) grant, CAVU will also provide Incopesca with technical and scientific overflights to facilitate the establishment of additional RFA´s in the region.
